This Boston Musical Instrument Company cornet is in the traditional Boston 3-star configuration—with shepherd’s crook and removable shanks and tuning bits. Cornet and all accessories (except grease tin) are gold plated. The serial number is 18344, indicating a date of manufacture of 1908. There are no dings or cracks; some minor pitting of the gold finish is evident on the upper branch of the leadpipe, just above the second valve crook. Valves are in their original brass, with relatively minor wear. They are tight, and the horn plays very well. All slides pull.
The main tuning slide is in Bb, with a rotary change to A. The Bb shank and two tuning bits (one 1.5”, the second 2.5”) allow tuning adjustments. The two mouthpieces are both stamped “Boston Musical Instrument Company”; both are traditional deep-cupped, with one slightly shallower than the other. The original mute is stamped with the number 1, framed by three stars. Only the swab holder rod is missing from this kit.
The leather-covered original wooden box is well-preserved inside and out. The leather covered top of the case is delicately tooled; handle, hinges and latches are all completely intact and functional. The inside of the case is in well-preserved deep blue velvet. The sash traversing the inside of the case lid is white, and bears the company’s name.
The brass nameplate on the outside of the box reads “F.C. Ross.” Though his name is not known to modern-day collectors and players, it is clear that Mr. Ross had this particular 3-Star cornet outfit specially configured to his specifications.
This is a wonderful opportunity to own a near-mint custom gold-plated Boston Three Star cornet with all accouterments!
