Haydn Transformed, Volume 6
For Count and Concert Hall
Haydn wrote these three quartets in 1793 specifically for public performance, and they were played in the large hall of the Hanover Square Rooms, at that time the largest concert hall in London, on the concert series organised by Johann Peter Salomon. This was the second group of three quartets that Haydn dedicated to his friend and patron Count Apponyi, making a set of six quartets that are now called the Apponyi Quartets. The six have been described as more symphonic than Haydn’s previous quartets.
Julien Tollot arranged the three Op. 74 quartets pour cornet, bugle, tenor, baryton et basse. ‘The Rider’, reconstructed for this recording by Sandy Coffin, especially highlights his clever scoring for brass. While he renamed the second movement Allegretto, he effortlessly retains the feel of Haydn’s beautiful Largo assai, providing the perfect contrast to the energetic first and last movements.
