AUGUSTE MIMART
This CD by The Wallace Collection, Origin of the Species: Evolution, presents the first recording of the complete chamber works of Auguste Mimart (1828-1868): his 6 Quintettes faciles pour 5 instruments de cuivre and his 6 Septuors pour 7 instruments de cuivre. The album explores developments of brass chamber music in Paris of the late 1850s, following after the quintets of Jean-François Bellon. Auguste Mimart, himself a horn player and student of Joseph Meifred at the Paris Conservatoire, wrote these works while serving as a chef de musique with the Gendarmerie of the Garde impériale in Paris, c1854-1859. They were published in 1860 while he was serving as a chef de musique with the French Navy forces in the South China Seas.
Performed on period instruments, this recording provides a new reference point for the performance practices of 19th century brass chamber music era in which these were composed. It is also a valuable re-introduction of this significant brass ensemble repertoire.
The CD includes a comprehensive booklet of liner notes. Additional materials about Auguste Mimart will be found in the performance editions and via The Wallace Collection website: www.thewallacecollection.world
