The serial number (20039) would normally put the manufacture date at 1960; however, this horn was completed in 1954 according to the shop card. Vincent Bach reserved a large number of serial numbers in the 20xxx range for an unknown reason, and the corresponding instruments were produced in the early 50's shortly after the move from the New York factory to Mt. Vernon. The horn is also stamped "MLB" on the casing, which denotes a difference in the valve black construction: The 1st casing is different than the normal model E casing found on nearly all Bach piston instruments. It is a model C casing, which causes the tubes of the 1st valve slide to be vertically in parallel, which in turn makes the wrap from the bell a bit tighter. This is often seen on models like the Martin Committee and various horns from Selmer Paris.
The playability of this horn is absolutely incredible, with a big focused sound, great centering, and a remarkably easy and secure upper register. The horn blossoms in all registers, and the blow is extremely even. There is some evidence of dent removal in the bell at the front brace, as well as some lacquer wear. Valve compression is excellent using Yamaha Synthetic Vintage oil. No case.
