Oil: Yamaha LightThis beautifully restored 1940 Chicago Benge ML bore Bb trumpet offers a rare chance to own a horn from one of Benge’s most iconic eras. We gave it a full professional cleaning, a precision valve alignment, and a fresh valve rebuild. We also replaced the leadpipe, 2nd slide crook, and finger buttons with newer stock, but the rest is original. There’s some minor but visible wear in the brass on many of the original parts, but it’s purely cosmetic, and we brought the finish up to a high polish. The horn came to us with five fantastic-looking patches already in place, and we added two more. No evidence of significant trauma or rot.
This was a fun trumpet to playtest, with its fat, full sound and bright halo that makes it shine in jazz and commercial settings. That said, with the right mouthpiece, it’s versatile enough to serve as an all-around player. The large bell throat gives the sound plenty of body, balancing nicely with the brilliance from the horn’s very light weight. The valves are smooth and soft under the fingers, and compression is excellent. The upper register speaks easily and maintains a secure, free-blowing feel. No case included.
