Where the 1S bell excels at commercial music with its seemingly endless supply of zing, the 1 bell is a bit more tame and its darker sound finds a better home in the jazz solo world. It was made sometime in the 1980s and is in good overall condition, with a few things to note: The bell bead has a bit of damage but is still whole, and there are some imperfections on the flare near it that we decided to leave alone for the greater good of the horn. There are some surface scratches throughout, but the plating is 100% intact, and there are no signs of red rot in the leadpipe. The 1st and 3rd valve slides move very well, the valves hold good compression with a thicker oil like Berp 3 or La Tromba T1, and the valve action is good -- we didn't experience any hangs in our play tests. Intonation and response are both good, and the slots leave a bit of room to maneuver; we think this would be a good horn for small-group jazz or even potentially a brass quintet. No case.
